Front Page - December 08, 2009

This week's front page photo was not originally intended to go there. I had two different photo-ops over the weekend I thought would produce some good choices for front page but they didn't. So I went through photos taken during the week and decided to use this photo from a quick stop one day to take 'update' photos at a local facility. I liked the view downstream and snapped the shot that ended up on the front page without thinking of putting it there at the time.

I contacted the local mining company about work that was taking place on site this past weekend and they offered not only details but photos as well. Once I saw the photos I bumped what I had originally put on front page to accommodate one photo, then I decided to do a slight redesign of the page to allow for two of the mine photos to fill front page. I liked how it looked, did another slight tweak and ended up with this week's Page 1!

With Santa coming to town it was a no-brainer as to who was going to get the front page photo. My only concern was what kind of photo. I was unable to attend the Christmas Celebration evening event (besides, I wasn't keen on trying to get the right night shot) so I opted for the indoor meeting of Santa with children. I took a bunch of photos and pretty much figured this one was going on front shortly after it was taken.

I knew the front page photo was going to come from the local Remembrance Day Ceremonies, but didn't really have a particular shot in mind. I took probably 30 that morning and used about 6 or 7 of them. The selection for front page ended up to be this shot of two captains from the local hockey team taking a wreath up to the Cenotaph. It was symbolic to me as it was the first time the team had participated and all players marched in the parade prior to the ceremonies.

The historic 'Caboose' was set to move to a new home last week. The plan was to remove the wheel assemblies and haul the 'wheel-less' caboose on the back of a flat deck truck to a location along Highway 3. The project ended up requiring larger equipment than was available at the time. My wife went up to the project during one morning and snapped a series of photos of the crew getting the caboose ready for the trip it didn't take that day. I liked this photo best as it looked more dramatic than the others.

The first snowfall of the season was an obvious choice for front page this week. The morning of the snowfall I went around the corner of the office as soon as I got in to work and took a series of photos of the downtown square covered in snow. I used most of them in the paper and the shot looking down the other main street went on front. The snow was all gone by the time the paper was published due to milder temperatures and rain.

We were tipped off during the week of a rock slide that had closed a nearby highway forcing residents of a nearby community to take a very long detour to get to town so I sent my wife out with the camera and told her to take 'a bunch' of photos. I wasn't sure what to expect from the scene so when she got back with a number of photos to choose from I was quite happy. This shot was the first one I thought would work out well on front and I used another three photos inside the paper. The road was opened while the photos were being taken, but that didn't change my decision.

I had heard that part of a local water project had progressed to the point where hydrants were up in a location that had been an empty field and thought it could make for some interesting photos, so I went to check it out. It wasn't exactly as I had hoped, but I took this photo from a low angle showing a familiar landmark in the background to make the point. It wasn't going to be the front page photo at first, but once I looked over my choices I discovered this photo would stand alone and be understood by local residents without a lot of details, which moved it to front.

This is a front page photo that wasn't originally the choice for front. In fact, I hadn't really had anything in mind for the front page photo by the time I started finishing Page 1. I decided to go through the file of unused photos taken this week and found this shot, an updated view of work being done on the Bridge of Dreams and thought it could stand on its own on front...and that's what happened!

Another issue with a full colour front page and I knew where I was going to get the photo from for it in advance. The local Midget Rep team are wearing pink jerseys this month to mark October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and games over the weekend were scheduled to show off the new uniforms. I snapped a number of photos from one game and when I downloaded this one - with a bouncing puck frozen in mid-air - I knew it was the photo for front page.

Knowing well in advance that we were going to have a colour front page made a bit of a difference in my selection of front page photo this week. Red is a colour that often catches the eye in a photo so the perfect photo in my mind required a lot of red in it. The Volunteer Thanks and Recruitment Night I had helped organize for the local hockey team presented the perfect opportunity when the Head Coach of the team presented Herb with this red team jacket. It was the only photo I considered for front and it was snapped early in the week.

The big story this past week was the installation of a new foot bridge across the Tulameen River. One of the largest cranes in Western Canada was used for the project which turned the job into quite a spectator sport. I was on site and took many photos of the first half of the bridge going in. A friend of mine saw me the next day and asked if I had any photos of the event. He had some from the final phase of the project he wanted to share and one of them ended up on front and another on Page 27. Both ran in full colour as I couldn't see using them in black and white.

The BC Bull Rider Finals were hosted in town over the weekend and I knew my front page photo was going to come from that event. I usually take a lot of photos of the bull riding to fill the paper and use one of the better shots on front. This year I decided to use a photo of a rider just as he's getting thrown from the bull. It gives a slightly different view of the action and all the other cowboys in the photo watching the rider made this the right choice for the front page.

The Bridge of Dreams across Tulameen River is big news around here linking together portions of the Trans-Canada Trail and work on preparing the site continued throughout the week, so I knew a photo of the progress being made would make a good front page so that was an easy decision. However, photos taken earlier in the week were quite dated by the time crews had finished half of the structure, so I went to the site and took a series of photos with the front page shot coming from that session. The second photo (which is actually an ad) is of the local hockey team bus. The ad promotes the team's home opener later in the week and promotes advertising space on the side of the bus.

This was an easy decision once I took these series of shots. I had originally saved the front page for another event held over the weekend and decided at that last minute to drop in on the hockey try outs. I took maybe a dozen photos and thought this one was far better than anything I could have used from the other venue. It also made more sense to use this photo as the major story on the front page is about the team.

There was a music festival held in town during the weekend and I pretty much determined that the front page photo was going to come from that event. I had taken a few photos over the weekend of various performers but found a group of street dancers to be far more interesting. By the time I found the right position for photos I knew that my front page photo was going to be of this group. I decided on a tight shot and snapped away. I liked this one once I downloaded it and used it. I think that's me in the reflection of her glasses, too!

I knew I was going to likely use a photo from this event (another pool party) for the front page, but wasn't sure what photo until I took a number of them. This shot, taken with full zoom across the width of the pool looked pretty good in greyscale and I thought it would make a pretty good choice.

This week's front page photo was not the original choice I had made. I took about a half dozen photos of Madison in this 'period costume' and had front page laid out and completed with a close-up head shot of her but at the last minute switched it with this photo as it shows more of the outfit she has on. I pretty much knew when I first took the photos one was going on front, so I just changed my mind at one point as to which one.

This photo came from a 'fun night' activity at the local pool. I was going to save the front page photo for a different event planned for later in the week, but I thought this photo of Taylor feeding chocolate syrup to a participant at 'Sock Hop Frenzie' was far better than anything I could have captured at the other event. Ice cream sundaes were being served to swimmers at the pool in stages, a scoop of ice cream followed by chocolate syrup and then whipped cream. No bowls, just directly in the kids' mouths, which made for some fun photos!

I went to check on a 'kids' summer activity program mid-week to find a few of them working with power tools and building planter boxes. I found it to be an interesting idea considering how young some of the participants were. I took some photos of the kids working on their projects and when one of the program leaders started to help one young boy I took this photo and knew almost right away it was going to end up on the front page.

The week was full of assorted news stories, but I held the front page photo for a shot from the 2nd annual Airshow held at Princeton Airport July 18th. I knew I'd use a shot from either the Canadian Forces Skyhawks Parachute Team or the Fraser Blues Formation Flyers, it just depended on what the photos looked like. I took almost 100 at the event and this one of the planes flying almost over top of me won, even though I had it zoomed so tight I trimmed out most of the third plane. I thought it looked as if the planes were flying off the front page and that was what made me put it there.

I went to a lot of different venues and activities over the week but had probably the most fun at the local swimming pool. I took a few shots of kids having fun and saw these three on this inflatable crab and got them to pose for me. I took about six different shots of them - some of them goofing around - and never thought about using any on front page until I downloaded them and saw this one. Once I had decided none of the rest of the photos taken during the week had a chance of bumping this one.

Princeton BC News - Issue #04

In our fourth 'historic information guide' publication in 13 months we've decided to focus on the historic trails in the Region. The HBC, Dewdney, Hope Pass and Whatcom Trails are featured. We not only share their history, but also examine future rehabilitation possibilities for each. The photo on the front of this issue is of a crew marking out what eventually became the Hope-Princeton Highway. The photo dates back to 1914 and came from the local Museum. It was the obvious choice as the content of this issue deals with historic transportation routes.

There were a couple of events to choose from this week for a front page photo. One was a car show that has been on front pretty much every year so I decided to save the front page photo for the art show featuring art work by a local Grade 12 student. I tried to get some candid shots of Dawn with her art and nothing seemed to work until she did the 'thumbs up' and I knew it was the photo I was after.

This week's front page photo came from the fifth race at Sunflower Downs. Live horse racing takes place once a year here and it's such a big draw that the event is always the obvious choice for the front page. I took some shots of horses leaving the starting gate and others of horses dashing to the finish line. I chose this photo as most of the horses in this race were grouped closly together as they approached me and I thought it made for an exciting photo.
