I had been invited to a 'test day' by the local figure skating club coach and was hoping for something from that session ending up on the front page. I snapped a number of shots, but for some reason the lighting in the arena played havoc with my photos so I had to tweak each one to a useable state. I narrowed them down to a couple for the front page and ended up using one with the coach and a girl who is the daughter of a friend of my wife. I didn't like all the advertising in the back of most of the photos, so I edited a lot of it out of some and chose not to use other photos for that reason. I'm still happy with the choice I made, though.

I had a mid-week hockey game to cover and found out at a meeting the previous night that the local minor hockey association players had received their new jerseys. I knew I'd see at least two of the new jerseys at the mid-week game and thought something like that would make a good front page photo. I found these two brothers on ice and got some shots of them showing off their new gear which was exactly what I was looking for!

I knew weeks in advance about a head shaving fundraiser for cancer and once this week arrived I knew I was going to try to get a shot of the event organizer on the front page. In addition to shooting some video, I snapped about 40 photos and liked this one best (her smile did it for me). The second photo was submitted and I thought it would look best on front in full colour to run along with the article related to the upcoming hockey game.

A short holiday trip just after Christmas found me taking photos on the side of the road at a spot my wife noticed. It was 'postcard perfect' and not intended for the paper until I was in need of a front page photo. I also put a promo photo of a new columnist to our paper in place of the iconic marmot head - the first time the marmot (our unofficial newspaper mascot) had been replaced since taking the top left corner position on March 17, 2009!

On our last issue of the year (we don't publishing the last week of December) I have tried to put a festive, seasonal photo on the front page the past few years. I had already determined I was going to try to use a photo this time taken in connection with the local Teddy Bear Hockey Game but wanted something other than hockey players collecting stuffed animal off the arena ice surface. Hours before the hockey game I thought a photo of the local youth ambassadors and the teddy bears would be a cute idea. They also liked it so I set up the shot and one of the girls suggested them hugging big teddy bears. I liked it and the shot was better than what I was trying to capture. This issue also features 'extra' Santa graphics in the masthead for the first time.

The local Junior B Hockey Club (of which I am Secretary) celebrated its 10th Anniversary this weekend and I knew the front page photo was going to be connected somehow to that. I wasn't able to attend the banquet, which featured former NHLer Cliff Ronning, but had access to him a number of times before the banquet. I ended up using this shot, taken from the webcast booth (I also do the team webcasts) and putting others of Ronning elsewhere in the paper.

This week's front page photo comes from a photo essay that my wife did for the paper. She has expressed interest in doing a bit more than taking photos, so this week she wrote a short feature and included a number of photos. I used this one as a 'teaser' for the article elsewhere in the paper.

I had a few days notice that Santa was coming to town late in the week and I pretty much decided the front page photo would be of him - but I wasn't sure what he'd be doing that would give me opportunity to get close-up photos. A formal photo-op for children was set up in the local library building and I stopped in twice during the session and was allowed to take as many shots as I wanted. Once I saw this one I knew it was the shot I was after.

Knowing full well that the main story for this week's issue would be about the 2011 Municipal Elections, I had no idea for a photo until one of our contributors sent in a few early in the week. I saw this 'postcard perfect' shot of the Similkameen River just starting to freeze up and I knew I couldn't put it anywhere else in the paper. I did tweak the colour a bit to bring out the greens, which I rarely do to a colour photo. I think it says far more than any other photo I could have taken during the week.

The annual Remembrance Day Service produced the usual amount of great photos for the paper, so I had a lot to choose from, but nothing really stood out for me when I got to deciding the front page photo. I did like the three generations in this photo, which I cropped slightly tighter to just highlight the people in the shot and that's what ended up pushing it to the front page location.

A local government building has been in the news off and on lately due to the condition of the exterior. This past week work started on repairs. I walk by the building each morning on my way to work and the morning I saw the start of renovations I called my wife at home and asked her to snap a few photos on her way into work. This shot was one of about six she took and I put it on the front page as it really shows the weather-beaten condition along with some of the early stages of repair.

Poppy Day is a significant event annually the local Legion uses to kick-start the annual Poppy Fund and remind residents of Remembrance Day coming up November 11th. My wife mentioned she saw someone outside the post office selling poppies and I handed her the camera. She snapped a few shots and I liked this one the best. The lady on the right was my former boss at the Similkameen News Leader. I bought the paper from her in 2004 and she currently works part-time for me.

Our newspaper is printed weekly in a community just an hour away and each Monday morning we make the trip to pick up our current edition. My wife normally takes the trip and usually carries a camera with her. Last Monday morning she came across this sight and snapped about a dozen photos for me to choose from. It was obvious to me that it was going to go on the front page and lucky for me, Brenda took enough shots I had some good choices to pick from!

A couple of photo-ops during the week did not produce the kind of photos I was hoping for the front page so it was late in the week and still I had nothing. One of the high school kids we have freelancing for us sent a photo of kids playing Quidditch in the school field as part of a Harry Potter Week celebration on the Friday and I liked it enough to use it on the front page.

This was another one of those weeks where I had nothing in mind for the front page, but I was aware of the second phase of a downtown sidewalk project getting underway not far from our office. As I did when the first phase of the project was taking place, I sent my wife out with her camera to snap some shots. I used three of them, including this one on the front page.

My wife bought herself a new camera early in the week and while she was learning how to use it she snapped a photo of a large building under construction near our home. The lighting, the angle of the shot, composition and framing quite impressed me and I thought it would look great on the front page - which is where it ended up.

This was a week with a lot of news, a lot of advertising, but not a lot of photos. A downtown sidewalk project was taking place near our office and I sent my wife out with her camera to get some snaps of it and other things going on around the community. I liked this shot enough to put it on the front page and used another four or six of her photos elsewhere in this issue.

The local Junior B Hockey Team hosted their home opener late in the week and I had pretty much determined the front page photo was going to come from that event. The only problem I had was that I was far busier than I expected to be at the game and didn't take many photos. I did like this one and chose to run the game story alongside it to fill the top half of the front page with the game.

I'm not sure why, but I was trying to find a way to get a photo on the front page that spoke about the changing of the seasons. It's been unusually warm the past couple of weeks and thought about shooting some photos of kids swimming in the river when one of my 'stringers' sent this photo. It was exactly what I was looking for!

The Labour Day long weekend was full of local activities so I held space in the paper for photos from those events. I sort of thought a horse race photo was going to go on front, but needed a different angle for shots taken at the local race track. I decided to try taking photos from the roof of the grandstand and found the perfect location. The 'big' feature race of the day was won by a local horse and the photo I snapped of it just yards away from the finish line ended up on the front page.

I attended the last theme night of the season at the local outdoor pool in the middle of the week and had pretty much decided the front page photo was going to come from that event. I snapped a few and ended up using this one basically because of all the blue in the photo.

This was not my first choice for the front page photo - in fact, I didn't have any of the photos I took this past week stand out enough for me to consider putting them on front. The local traditional music festival produced many photo-ops for me, but none of the shots I took really screamed 'Front Page' to me, so I settled for this shot which was taken just after the opening ceremonies of the event.

I wasn't sure what I was going to put on the front page for a photo this week, and although I took photos of the new ice logos at the local arena shortly after they were completed, it wasn't my first choice for the front. After cropping the centre ice logo shot tighter and looking over my other choices, I went with the ice photo.

I didn't really have anything in mind for the front page photo as I was putting the paper together during the week, but did snap a couple of roadside photos during the past weekend on a trip with my wife, Brenda. She asked that I take a photo of a dead tree next to a lake about 35-kilometres north of town. While there I snapped this photo and upon closer inspection I thought it would be a great front page photo.

I attended another of the special theme nights at the local outdoor pool mid-week and snapped a number of photos for the paper. I was hoping for an action shot for the front page and was not disappointed when this little guy took a few jumps into the pool. A number of the other shots taken that evening appear elsewhere in this issue as well.

The Little Britches Rodeo was held over the weekend and I had pretty much decided that a front page photo was going to come from that event. I attended a portion of the first day and snapped a number of photos, but none that just jumped out at me. I eventually narrowed it down to this photo and a couple others. I wasn't convinced at first that this photo was what I wanted on front, but after looking at it (and at least two others) on a front page template I decided to leave it there.

I was expecting to get what I would consider a good front page photo from the local annual air show late in the week and I was not disappointed. The search and rescue demo was on the tarmac about 300 feet in front of me and with my zoom almost fully in use I snapped a bunch of photos. This one ended up on front as it shows two airmen riding together back up into the rescue helicopter, which I thought was kind of cool.

I attended a cheque presentation late in the week where I thought it was going to be far more formal than it was. The $10,000 cheque was being presented to the local Museum Society and I had just toured the newly renovated facility just prior to the cheque presentation. After waiting for others to show, the small group on hand suggested proceeding without the others they were expecting, so I staged the photo in front of a display inside the museum and got a shot I thought would fit nicely on front with a lead story alongside it.

The biggest annual celebration weekend of the year happened June 30-July 3 and was kicked off with live horse racing - a 43 year tradition in the community. I went to the races long enough to snap photos from the first two races thinking I might get a lucky shot for the front page. This photo, with another horse just outside the frame to the left, pretty much told the story as far as I was concerned once I cropped it tight to these three horses.

The annual Grad Issue is where we usually put the 'official' graduating class group photo. Each year I arrive at the school a couple hours before the ceremony to get small group photos along with the shot of the whole class. This year was another easy set up, except two students were late and did not make it into the group photo. It automatically got the front page location regardless.

A local resident brought a complete series of photos he had taken of this little fawn trying to reach his parents near the beginning of the week. I had narrowed down my choices to two shots and this was the one that ended up on the front page. No other photos taken during the week came close to bumping this one off of Page 1.

I attended the annual School Board Long Service/Retirement Celebration early in the week and snapped a few photos of those being honoured at the event. This photo was originally knocked down to greyscale and placed on a page deeper in this week's issue. I kept going back to it and looking at it and eventually decided to put in on the front page.

I went to the local outdoor pool mid-week to take some photos to run in the paper to promote the fact that the facility was open for the season. One of the photos I kept going back to even though I had put it on another page with a number of others from the pool. I knew there was a reason why I kept going back to it and eventually put it on the front - where it obviously should have been from the beginning.

Once again our Youth Rep saves the day with a series of photos she took at her high school. A number of students in her class hosted a 24-hour famine event to collect non-perishables for the local food bank. In the process the students spent the time at school playing various games and eventually sleeping in the school gym. This photo came from the day of games and it was interesting enough for me to use it on the front page. Another 13 photos from the same set were used elsewhere in this issue.

The local youth ambassador program held their annual speech night in the past week and I requested our Youth Rep attend and take some photos. The lighting was not very good for photos, but she did get some pretty good photos just the same. This casual group shot I liked enough to put on front page and used six more from the event elsewhere in the paper.

Our sixth 'historic tourist information guide' was completed this week. The front page photo, which dates back to the early 1900's, was one I had on file from the local Museum. I had used it before (in black and white) inside our first issue of Princeton BC News, but felt running it on front with a sepia tone was alright as it was connected to some of the copy contained in this issue.

The weekend before this issue was being put together my wife and I went for a trip to a neighbouring community. Along the way I noticed what I considered an usually high amount of snow in places and made a mental note to snap some photos on the way home later that same day. This photo, taken from a small bridge on Highway 3 shows the Similkameen River with at least four feet of snow along the banks. In the week following our trip warmer weather started a fast thaw and this photo became the choice for front page. The story to the right of it just made it all tie together.

An outdoor event in the centre of town - which is only three doors down from our office - made for some easy photos mid-week. I took about 20 in total and liked this one best out of all of them, although I used eight others elsewhere in this week's issue. This front page photo also marks the first time in 2011 I snapped the photo to grace the cover of my newspaper! I've been so fortunate to have some great submissions from other contributors all year, but FINALLY I got one!

It was near the end of the week and I had no photo chosen for the front page, then one morning I found a series of shots taken from a highway project nearby in my e-mail from a regular contributor. I used all of the photos and chose this one - one of the most dramatic of the series - for the front page.

I had a different photo on the front page late in the week of a group of students posing, but changed it to this photo. Both were contributed by others, and although this photo was taken on a handheld device, I thought the colours were dramatic enough that it made this more eye catching than my original choice.

I knew in advance that the local youth ambassador program was featuring an event this week, but it was on a night when I was unavailable or I would have attended. Our Youth Rep went in my place and snapped some amazing photos - many of which were used throughout this issue, including on the front page. The rainbow of colours made the choice very easy for me. I did end up getting a single photo of my own in this week's issue from another event.

Once again our Youth Rep snapped the perfect front page photo. I had asked her to get photos of local Grade 8's upon their return back to town from a regional Science Fair. I was expecting photos of students with their projects but instead, ended up with casual group shots and photos of their medals, which were much better than my original plan. This photo was the best of the bunch and it ended up on front.

This week's front page was the second to last page finished. This happens frequently if I'm holding the space for something happening near deadline, but this week I just didn't have anything for it. Then our Youth Rep dropped in on the Friday with a few photos of pranks Grads played earlier in the day - April Fool's Day. This photo caught my eye as soon as I saw it and that's why it's on the front page this week.

Our Youth Rep was in the office mid-week and I handed her my camera and asked her to take some photos of the construction going on downtown. The local high school Grad Class hosts an annual 'fun' hockey game against teachers, local police and other dignitaries as a fundraiser for Grad activities. I couldn't attend the event due to another commitment, so I got our Youth Rep to take care of it. She was working at the event and between her and a friend managed to snap about 120 photos. I picked about 20 I liked and this one ended up on front page. I used another eight or ten of them elsewhere in the issue.

Another week where another 'submitted' photo made it onto the front page. This time it's a photo of a Special Olympics participant (who also happens to deliver our newspaper to a number of customers) on his way to a Gold Medal run down the slopes at a recent Special O Winter Games event. His coach shared a number of photos with us and although there is a page full of them elsewhere in this issue, this photo stood out and ended up on the front.

I typically look forward to taking photos at the Grade 8 Science Fair at the local high school. This year I asked our Youth Reporter if she'd like to take this little task on. I explained what sorts of photos I was looking for and she delivered exactly what I asked. I had many choices for front page, but finally narrowed it down to two photos. This one won simply because I know this girl and thought putting her on front would generate some positive feedback for her. I used many more of the photos taken at the Science Fair elsewhere in the paper publishing a total of nine!

An assignment I gave our high school reporter was to get photos from the annual 'Anti-Bullying Day' activities at her school. She was heavily involved in the program offered during the day and passed her camera to two other students to get photos for the paper. This group shot of students around a guest speaker (BC Lions safety J. R. LaRose) stood out to me as soon as I saw it and I thought it would make a colourful front page.

The local Junior B hockey team played a fun game with the local Novice players last weekend and I knew our Youth Rep was going to be there, so I requested some photos. She brought back a lot and I used a number of them. This one caught my eye and was chosen for front page just about as soon as I saw it.

I received a police report mid-week and sent my wife over to the location of the 'mischief' call hoping for some interesting photos. The store owner told her he had some great photos taken for insurance purposes and promised to share them. He e-mailed ten photos to us and I liked the one that ended up on front page as it was taken indoors looking out through the 'spider-web' shattering of safety glass. It was one of three holes in the storefront, but the most dramatic so it ended up on the front page alongside the story of the incident from the local RCMP Detachment.

I had nothing for the front page by the end of the week - no stories and no photo - when early on deadline Friday a serious accident about 30-km away forced the closure of one of the main highways into town. The story took front page and a photo my wife took of the flag person at the end of town ended up solving my problem. I was also looking for a 'brightly-coloured' photo for this week since the last couple were not as bright and this photo also provided me with what I wanted in that respect as well.

Oddly enough, another week where I didn't have to take any photos for the paper as I had so many contributed for this issue. When my 'stringer' shared some of her photos with us I saw this one and thought it made a great front page photo for two reasons. First, I thought it showed how much ice had formed on the Similkameen River, and secondly, since I couldn't find anyone on our office (myself included) who would risk walking on it as these two fellows did I thought it spoke about the dangers of taking such a risk. With those two reasons in mind I put it on the front page early in the week and that's where it stayed.

For some reason I never took a single photo this past week as I was very lucky to have others send me theirs. With an ice jam in the local river and the flooding which followed, I had a large selection to pick from and ended up using this photo - taken by my wife, Brenda - as I thought it was the most dynamic of the photos received. Although the water is no longer as high and the story is actually 'old' by now, I thought it was still significant enough to use some of the photos sent to me on the subject. Just like last week, this was another of those apparently 'rare' weeks where I hadn't taken very many photos for the paper. Our Youth Rep and I discussed an idea of hers mid-week of taking photos of students cramming for term-end final exams and I liked it. She also provided a story. When I saw her photos I knew she was on to something. When I saw this one I knew it was going on the front page.

It was one of those weeks where I hadn't taken many photos at all and our 'Youth Rep' showed up with a memory card full of photos of her Biology 12 Class field trip to Science World in Vancouver. I quickly picked about nine of the photos out and chose this one for the front page simply because I thought it stood out from all the rest she had offered me to use.

I had virtually no new photos in this issue as we typically do a 'year in review' feature in the first issue of the New Year which means recycling photos from the past twelve months. So when it came to the front page I knew I needed something that wasn't an old photo kept on file. It wasn't until our 'stringer' in the other end of the valley sent some unexpected photos of locals celebrating New Year's Eve indoors playing cards that I knew I had just the right photo for this issue.

The annual Teddy Bear Game I thought would be a good place to capture a front page photo, except my camera wasn't working at the time. I decided the following day to take some random shots of the stuffed animals that were collected and decided on this shot - after a little creative editing where I took out a brand name label from just about the centre of the photo - as being the right one for our annual Christmas issue.

I don't like leaving the front page to last, but sometimes it happens. The page can be laid out and all that's missing is a photo. This week was an exception. The front page was finished mid-week thanks to this photo-op of a $15,000 cheque being presented to the local trails society. I had to tweak the photo quite a bit as my low batteries did not throw a very bright flash, but the end result was pretty much what I was looking for. I managed to get only two shots before my batteries totally gave up in the cold and lucky for me no one blinked in either of the dimly lit shots I was able to take.

I knew the annual Country Christmas Craft Fair was coming up and although it was on a Sunday, I needed some photos to finish the paper - including one for the front page. I was certain I'd find the right photo at that event and I did with the one I used and one other possible choice. The trio of Santa's eventually won.

I thought the burgundy-coloured 'away' jerseys worn by the local hockey team at a recent home game would look pretty cool on the front page in colour, so I tried to get a good shot at that game. I ended up with a few possibilities, however, one shot had too much advertising in the background and another just wasn't exactly what I was looking for. This shot, once it was cropped a bit, ended up being my final choice.

I had a number of options available to me for the front page photo this week simply because I had taken a lot of photos from a variety of events. There was a photo I had in mind for front, but that idea got dashed one evening when members of the local community band stopped by the office to play some Christmas music as part of the annual Christmas Light-Up Celebration. Although I got them to pose for this photo, I liked it enough to put it on the front page.

I knew before attending the Remembrance Day Service on November 11th that this week's front page was going to be colour, so I tried to keep that in mind when I was taking photos at the event. I thought a few photos of young people placing wreaths spoke loudly about the impact of Remembrance Day and once I saw this photo downloaded off the camera I knew it was going to be on the front page.

This week's front page was going to be obvious in relation to Remembrance Day but I wasn't sure what the photo was going to end up being until I went out one morning and snapped some photos around the Cenotaph and of window displays with wreaths and poppies in them. I took the poppy off my jacket and placed it on the Cenotaph and took a couple of macro shots of it. Once I downloaded them I thought a shot of a single poppy said much more than any of the other photos I took so it went on the front.

This week's front page photo came from my reporter. She lives barely a block away from this public works project and snapped a few photos a few days ago. She thought this was the best shot as you can see one of the crewmen on top of the hill, but under the arm of the trencher. I agreed and it ended up on the front page.

A project which will see the lighting of the Trans-Canada Trail section which passes through town (and oddly enough, only 200-feet from our home) started this week. I snapped a number of photos to use on a 'photo page' and decided later in the week to use one on the front page to stand alone on a busy front page.

This week that was no shortage on public works projects going on to take photos of, but I hadn't really considered them as choices for front page until I went and took some shots of the bridge rehabilitation project at the end of the main street downtown. I zoomed in pretty tight on two guys working near the top of the bridge and liked this one the most.

I attended a 'golf event' featuring players from the local hockey team paired up with local seniors. I had been to the golf course enough times to know an easy place to access for photos so I waited for the foursomes to catch up to me and snapped away everything from putting shots, tee-off photos and chipping shots so I had a variety to choose from. When I saw this photo I decided it was going to go on front and in colour as I thought knocking it into greyscale would have been a waste of a great photo of two hockey players on the green.

The local Rotary Club kicked off a campaign to "End Polio Now" on October 1st with members around town with brightly coloured signs announcing the theme of the event for District 5060. I saw this one member all alone on a downtown street early that morning and snapped his photo thinking right away it would end up on the front page.

This week's front page photo came from a short session around town looking for 'filler' photos. The controversy surrounding this project (which happens to be only yards from where our house is) pushed it to the front page. Other than that, it's a 'nothing special' photo but tells a story just the same.

As I knew early in the week this was going to be a full colour front page I kept it in mind when attending various photo-ops. It wasn't until late in the week that I decided to try to get a photo from a local hockey game. I was hoping the team was going earn their first win of the season, which they did, and it made the photo choice make more sense. As for the photo, it was probably the best one taken at the game. I wanted something 'busy' and I got that with a blue line face off photo.

This was not originally planned to be the front page photo. In fact, I didn't really have anything planned for that spot until I went out late in the week taking 'filler' photos. This close up shot of a ceramic mural unveiled the week before turned out to be quite striking when knocked down to greyscale and that's how it ended up on the front page.

I had attended this cheque presentation photo-op at the local arena and chose to take the photo outdoors. After taking it I left it on the camera memory card as I collected other photos that day and the following day. I downloaded the photos later in the week and put them in a file on my main computer. Once I was down to four pages left in this issue it occurred to me I hadn't put anything on the front page yet and had used all photos up to this point except this one. That was a good enough reason to put it on front page.

The annual Fall Fair is usually a great place to snap photos for the paper, so I went on the Saturday ready to fill my camera with plenty of photos. I did get what I considered some really good shots of various activities taking place during the event, but at the last minute (and on my way out of the venue) I decided to fire off a couple photos at the horseshoe tournament. As soon as I downloaded this photo I knew it was going on the front page.

The annual Traditional Music Festival took place in town over the weekend and I planned on using a photo from that event for the front page. In the past I have used photos of one of the street dancing groups and went to watch them perform. I snapped a number of photos at that time and during a number of the musical performances as well. This young street dancer ended up getting on the front page based on his expression and overall appearance.

I knew in advance this was going to be a colour front page, so I sort of kept that in mind when I was taking photos all week for this issue. I attended a casual wrap-up for a local children's drop-in day camp program and snapped a bunch of photos of the kids playing. This shot caught my eye and stood out for me. I'm sure I had better photos, but for some reason I liked this one and it ended up on the front page.

I admit it, I 'set up' part of this shot. I had just missed the very same scene by the time I got into position so I asked the participants to 'pretend' they were doing what I had missed. I snapped a few quick shots not really thinking this was going to go on the front page until I downloaded the photos and looked at them again. The girl in the centre watching the shot I'm taking made the photo look more interesting than I had expected so I was very pleased with the final outcome.

The big event during the week was Tulameen Days in the small nearby community of Tulameen. I knew I was going to take a lot of photos during the slo-pitch tournament, downtown carnival and parade so I was confident the front page photo was going to come from that event. What I didn't expect was this great photo of an Australian tourist in the 'Tulameen Jail' giving me this incredible expression. It was exactly the perfect shot for the front page!

This week's front page photo falls under the fluke category. I had attended a number of events during the week and didn't take any of 'those' photos that just screamed front page once downloaded onto my computer. The front page position was empty right up to the time I was close to finished with the complete issue. I went back through the file of photos taken eariler in the week at the local pool and found this shot that - once cropped tighter than the original - was good enough for front page.

The big event this week was the Airshow being held at the local airport. I knew in advance we would be putting out a colour front page, so I knew I would have a photo from the air show there. I didn't expect enough room for two photos, but decided to make them as interesting as I could so I used one with a clear blue sky background on the top half of the front page and a second shot of a plane skimming low to the runway on the bottom half of that page.

This week I attended the 'official' grand opening of the new library building downtown and took a number of photos there. I hadn't planned on the ribbon cutting photo being on front page, but assisted in 'staging' the photo just in case. There were no better photos taken during the week so I put this one on front.

The biggest weekend of the year in Princeton is Racing Days. This year a car show was also added to the number of activities planned for the three days. I knew I was going to put a photo from one of the horse races on the front page and snapped this shot of the horses sprinting in the first race of the day. It was the only action shot I took there. I added the second photo of a 1952 Pontiac Catalina to tie in with the lead story about the weekend full of activities.

This is our Grad Issue. As this is our second biggest paper of the year (Christmas being #1) we went full colour on the front and in the centre pull-out section. The photos used on front this year include the 'traditional' group photo on top and this year I added a shot of the Valedictorian simply because I wanted some bright colours on the front page. The yellow balloons were just what I was after. An interesting side note - this issue features a graduation cap on our 'mascot' marmot in the top left of the page. Oddly enough, the cap and tassel are the same colours as our local high school colours.

It's not every day we see two Olympic Gold Medalists in our community, so I spent part of the morning following them around and snapping all kinds of photos. I knew one of them was going to go on the front page so I didn't worry about it during the day. The same afternoon I snapped more at a public presentation and chose this photo from that venue. There's about another dozen photos of them inside the paper as well.

I got invited to a youth basketball tournament and decided to go for about an hour. The lighting in the school gym made taking photos anywhere other than at my end of the basketball court quite difficult. I was in the mezzanine overlooking the gym floor, which I like using for these sorts of events. I snapped a bunch of photos and when I saw this one with a player getting double coverage I knew it was front page material.

The front page of our fifth 'historic information guide' actually features two photos related to the story about the local brewery. Both were contributed by the local museum for this publication and it only made sense to run both photos with the article. I wasn't looking for anything that would be considered a 'grabber' for this project and chose to go with a 'light' article with photos on the first page.

Here's an example of where an accident photo takes priority. I had attended the annual long service/retirement celebration hosted by the local school board and picked out a photo taken of a retiree for the front page. A couple days later a pick up truck sailed down a pathway from one part of town to downtown ending up in the parking lot next to our office. My part-time reporter snapped a couple quick photos and one of them bumped my photo off of the front page.

I attended the Youth Ambassadors 'Speech Night/Fashion Show and Chocolate Extravaganza' during the week and knew I would get a lot of photos from that event for this week's paper. I went early and grouped the Candidates together for what I was hoping was going to be the front page photo. I took about four shots of this arrangement and the best shot ended up exactly as I planned it to be - on front page!

The new library building was completed this past week and I got inside before it was open to the public and took a number of photos to run in this week's paper to show off the new facility. I pretty much knew at the time my front page photo would come from that news item, but didn't decide on a photo until I took a few from the outside looking at the new building. The best of those shots made it on the front.

I knew the front page photo this week was going to come from the annual Princeton Rodeo, so I snapped a few shots while I was there. Although I liked this photo because the cowboy and bull are completely in the air, I was not entirely satisfied with it as I'm looking at them from behind. However, it still said a lot about the event so it ended up on front.

This week's front page photo was an obvious choice for me. I attended an open house at the local mine and took a lot of photos of equipment and the surroundings. The massive size of this brand new truck said a lot to me about the optimism the project has brought to the community as well as the overall scale of the project. The photo said those things to me so it got picked for the front page.

I wasn't going to go to the Grad Talent Show, but decided basically the day before that I would. I'm glad I did as I ended up shooting a bunch of photos. The one of Alyssa that ended up on the front page was one of two choices I had in mind and once I compared the two shots this one won over the other. The other shot did end up elsewhere in the same issue anyway.

I went to an event at the local high school expecting a few more photo opportunities than there were and decided after I downloaded the photos that the best one from the set could go on front with a caption 'teaser' to send readers deeper into this week's issue to find the story associated with the photo.

This was not the original photo for the front page. I had a photo related to one of the front page stories there first, but decided that since the bridge dedication ceremony was probably the biggest story from the week that it should be on front instead. I took several shots during the ceremony and prior to the ribbon cutting but used this one as it captured the cut ribbon falling apart from each person's scissor snip and still in mid-air before dropping to the ground.

This was one of those weeks where I didn't have a lot of my own photos to use, but was lucky enough to have a few contributed from other sources. The CAF CC-130 Hercules aircraft photo submitted to run with a story on the local airport was chosen for front page almost as soon as it was received and stayed there.

I attended an informal 'self-defense' class hosted by local RCMP for the Youth Ambassador Candidates. I was hoping for a front page photo from the event and snapped away for the hour I was there. I got a lot of good photos and used a number of them in the paper. This shot of Meagan reacting to pressure points behind her ears I thought was a perfect front page photo and allowed for a short caption to explain what was going on.

I attended a number of meetings during the week and had a number of photos to choose from for the front page, but chose this one as it will tie into an upcoming promotion by the group Ken represents. He was speaking at a Rotary meeting early in the week and after attending another meeting with him later in the week I decided his photo was going to end up on front.

I knew the year end awards night for the local hockey team was going to produce a lot of photos for this issue, so I saved the front page photo for that. I didn't intend to have the same player on front two weeks in a row, but Dan deserved it for being named team MVP. The second photo on front is of a special award presented to the team bus driver. I thought putting it there would show that the event wasn't just about the players and liked how it fit in the bottom corner of the front page.

The Princeton Posse played their final playoff game March 13th and I wanted to put a photo from that game on the front page, so I snapped quite a few while I was doing the webcast play-by-play for the team. When I downloaded the photos I saw this one which shows the team captain in his final game in a Posse jersey alongside one of the standout rookies on the team. I thought it was a fitting tribute to both players as well as the team and chose it for the front page location.

The local high school hosted a career program for grade 8 students last week. I almost didn't go but decided to at the last minute. I snapped a few photos and when I downloaded them and saw these two girls working on cutting pipe I thought it was perfect for the front page. No other photo taken during the rest of the week came close to bumping it.
